Overview
Laser therapy is type of surgery that can permanently destroy sweat glands under the arms and decrease sweating.

Laser therapy may be considered in severe cases of excessive underarm sweating when other treatments have proven ineffective.

What does it involve?
The goal of laser surgery is to decrease underarm sweating by destroying sweat glands under the arms.

Choose a dermatologist who is trained and experienced in laser therapy for underarm sweating.

Before the laser treatment, the doctor will apply a topical anesthetic to your skin. Tiny incisions are made in the skin to allow access for the surgical laser.

During the laser treatment, lasers are precisely targeted on sweat glands. The laser heats sweat glands and destroys them.

Laser therapy is generally effective after one treatment.

Recovery
After the procedure, you may experience bruising and swelling under the arms for a week or two.

Results
One small study on laser therapy for underarm sweating found that sweating was reduced by more than 90 percent in 22 participants.

Constraints
You may require touch-up treatment if sweating does not improve sufficiently.

Laser therapy may cause temporary pain and swelling in the underarm.

There are relatively few dermatologists with the equipment and training to perform laser therapy for underarm sweating; you may need to travel to receive treatment.

Health insurance may not cover laser therapy for hyperhidrosis. Costs for laser therapy can be high.
